Kid Friendly Bike Rides in Portland in August/September

Portland, Oregon is known for being bicycle friendly, with an abundance of bike paths and trails to stimulate and challenge any enthusiast. For many people, bicycling is a family affair, and it is not uncommon to see parents accompanied on their ride by little ones in child seats and trailers, as well as children riding their own set of wheels. While it is great to instill in your children at a young age a love of bicycling both as a form of physical fitness and as a means of transportation, it is important to take the proper precautions with young riders to protect them against bicycle accidents and injuries. When training children in basic bicycle safety and handling, the best places to let them ride is on trials that present minimal hazards. The following are some of our favorite kid friendly bike paths to enjoy with your family, all of which are perfect for a late summer outing.

Biking Trails in Portland For Families

While riding a bike is a great skill to teach children at a young age, it is important to be aware of the potential dangers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 500,000 people each year suffer serious injuries as a result of bike accidents, and roughly half of those injured are children. In addition to instilling in your children the importance of wearing a helmet when riding, you can help ensure their safety by taking them on paved trails in areas specifically designed for bicyclists, where they will be protected against the dangers posed by cars and heavy traffic. The following are some of our favorite places where families can enjoy a safe and fun filled day of riding:

Springwater Corridor

As part of Portland’s 40-Mile Loop system, Springwater Corridor follows a former railway line as it winds over bridges, through city neighborhoods, and along Johnson Creek. Most of the trail is paved and perfect for young riders, who will also enjoy seeing the horses at the park’s equestrian facilities.

The Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade

With paved bike trails and sweeping views of the Willamette River, the East Bank Esplanade is the ideal location for a family bike outing while helping develop your children’s biking skills.

Waterfront Park

Another popular destination for bicycle enthusiasts that offers great riding and waterway views, Waterfront Park is a family favorite. Children can take a break from riding to splash in the public fountain or get a lesson in history by visiting the Battleship Oregon Memorial.

Powell Butte Nature Park

Looking to get away from the city for a day? Powell Butte Nature Park offers the perfect setting for young bike riders to hone their skills, while looking to catch a glimpse of the abundant wildlife that call the park home.
