During Difficult Times, Here’s What to Do if You Suffer a Personal Injury

People across the country and around the world are on high alert dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. For many of us, our usual jobs and activities have been disrupted but there are still important daily tasks that must be dealt with. Unfortunately, people you encounter are likely to be distracted or in somewhat of a panic, making accidents more likely to happen. During difficult times, it is important to be aware of what you need to do in the event personal injuries occur.

Circumstances Make Personal Injuries in Portland More Likely to Happen

Along with the rest of the nation, Portland is facing trying times. According to a March 19, 2020 report by KOIN News, government leaders have announced sweeping protective measures to help residents. This includes halting evictions for those unable to pay rent and restricting non-emergency medical services to conserve resources. Restaurants are doing only deliveries or take-out orders while grocery stores run on limited hours.

Public impacts due to the virus have taken hold so quickly, it is proving hard for many to adjust. People are fearful, anxious, and increasingly distracted. Despite quarantines, plenty of Portland residents still have to get to and from jobs while others head out for exercise or in search of supplies. It is important to be aware of how these circumstances increase your personal injury risks. Common types of accidents that are likely to occur and their causes include:

  • Motor vehicle accidents, due to speeding and other reckless driving behaviors;
  • Slip and fall injuries, which can happen in stores or other public places to slick surfaces and aggressive crowds;
  • Getting struck by or against objects, such as when reaching for supplies on high shelves;
  • Pedestrian and bike accidents, due to crowded parking lots and distracted drivers.

What to Do in the Event of Personal Injuries

Even a minor accident could leave you suffering serious personal injuries. To protect yourself, follow these steps:

  • Report the incident immediately to local law enforcement or security officers on the property: While people in these positions may be overwhelmed with requests, it is important to insist that an accident report is filed.
  • Get the names and contact information of others involved: This includes any witnesses at the scene.
  • Take pictures of the accident scene and any injuries you suffer: This can help document information and provides valuable evidence in your case.
  • Get medical care: While a March 10, 2020 KATU News report claims doctors and hospitals in Portland are screening patients and limiting visits, it is important to get yourself checked. Many serious conditions have symptoms which can take days or weeks to appear.
  • Keep a personal injury journal: Document treatment instructions, expenses you incur,  and any adverse effects you experience.
