Steep Grades One of Many Hazards Facing Vancouver Bicyclists

Accidents involving motor vehicles are a serious threat for those riding bicycles to and from work or as a form of recreation. However, a recent fatal bike accident in Vancouver highlights another common hazard: dangerous road conditions. Steep Grades Contribute to Bicyclist’s Death

Steep grades are being blamed as the leading contributing factor in a bicycle accident which claimed the life of a Camus physician. According to a report by The Columbian, 51-year-old Michael Myers was reported missing while out on a bicycle ride during the late afternoon hours on November 9th, 2018. At roughly 8:00 p.m. that evening, Myers was found on Northwest Sierra Drive, a residential area known for having steep, twisting hills and many sudden, sharp turns. He had apparently lost control of his bike and crashed into a house on the 4200 block. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Myers, a radiation oncologist with PeaceHealth Medical Group who was married with two sons, was known as an avid and experienced cyclist among his family and friends. While there were no witnesses to the actual crash which claimed his life, law enforcement investigators are ruling it a tragic accident. At this point in the investigation, there is no additional evidence to indicate traffic conditions or the actions of another motorist were involved.

Dangerous Road Conditions for Bicyclists

While the reckless actions of motor vehicle drivers, such as speeding, running traffic lights, and drunk driving, are all factors that are common in bicycle accidents, road conditions can present significant dangers as well. In addition to steep grades and sharp road turns, Bicycling.com states that the following types of hazards can jeopardize the safety of even the most experienced bicyclists:

• Gravel roads: These make it hard to get traction and could cause you to skid or spin out of control.
• Gravel corners: Even on paved roads, it is common for gravel to be present on corners. This can be particularly hazardous on curves leading up mountains and steep roads.
• Wet roads: Wet, rainy conditions, which are common in our area, make it more likely to lose control of your bike;
• Potholes: Potholes or any types of cracks in the road could catch a tire, causing a sudden stop and throwing you over the bike.

When possible, avoid these types of conditions. Maintaining your bike, keeping tires properly inflated, and wearing protective gear can also help to reduce the likelihood for serious injuries.
