Mardi Gras Celebrations In Portland: How To Have Fun While Reducing Personal Injury Risks

New Orleans is a popular destination for Mardi Gras each year, hosting a variety of fun and festive events that draw people from around the world. Fortunately, you do not have to travel to the Big Easy to take part in balls, parades, and other Mardi Gras-related activities. A local group has made a point of bringing the sights, sounds, and traditions of an authentic Mardi Gras experience to our local area. Read on to find out more about the festivities that are planned and how to get involved, as well as common types of Mardi Gras accidents and how to reduce your personal injury risks.

What is Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras is an annual event that has its roots in religious traditions, but has evolved over the years to be embraced by people from all walks of life and all faiths. Based on ancient pagan practices, it celebrates the coming of spring and prepares for the yearly self-sacrifices commonly associated with the Judeo-Christian Lenten season.

Most people associate Mardi Gras with Fat Tuesday, traditionally a night of wild indulgence before Lent officially begins. In truth, Margi Gras actually consists of many activities, held over the course of the weeks and months prior. New Orleans, Louisiana has traditionally been the epicenter of these festivities, but a local group is dedicated to ensuring that Portland residents have a chance to partake in the culture, fun, and tradition as well.

Mardi Gras Celebrations In Portland, Oregon

The Mysti Krewe of Nimbus was formed in Portland in 2010 with the goal of bringing an authentic Louisiana Mardi Gras experience to our area. The Krewe hosts the annual Mardi Gras Parade, an elaborate event that takes place on North Mississippi Avenue. It draws thousands of Portland residents, many of whom adorn themselves in elaborate masks, costumes, and the traditional beads. Among the festivities included for 2023:

Marching musical acts, featuring popular local artists;
A children’s Mardi Gras costume contest;
A formal Mardi Gras ball, held at the Wonder Ballroom in Northeast Portland.

Outside of Mardi Gras season, the Mystic Krewe raises money for local charities and participates in other events in our area. These include the Portland Rose Festival Starlight Parade, the Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival, Portland Pride Parade, and Music on Main Street. You can find out details about these activities, Krewe history and traditions, and options for joining on the group’s website.

Make Safety A Priority At Portland Mardi Gras Events

Mardi Gras events are commonly associated with excess and indulgence. While there is nothing wrong with letting loose occasionally, be sure and make safety a top priority when celebrating Mardi Gras in Portland this year.

Unfortunately, the City of Portland reports that pedestrian accidents remain a major problem. When participating in the street parade or attending other events downtown, be sure and use caution. Be aware of the role alcohol plays in causing Mardi Gras-related personal injuries in Portland as well. Common accidents that can happen before, during, or after festivities include:

Car accidents;
Bicycle accidents;
Slips, trips, and falls;
Getting struck by or against objects.

To protect yourself and avoid personal injuries, avoid driving, bicycling, or walking around town if you are under the influence. Pick someone to act as a designated driver or get a room at one of the local hotels for the night. Use caution during parades and other activities as well. Avoid roped off areas or trying to climb on floats and other moving vehicles. Keep an eye out for exits and leave immediately if the crowd begins pushing or otherwise gets aggressive or destructive.
