Protests In Portland and Police Chases Increase Car Accident Risks

Similar to cities across the country, Portland streets have recently erupted with protests. In the midst of plans to reopen businesses closed due to the pandemic, the latest situation is causing chaos and increased car accident risks. Blocked streets, traffic tie-ups, and distracted drivers all make crashes and collisions more likely to occur. It is not only protesters you need to be concerned about though; indeed, police chases can also put drivers in danger.

Protecting Driver Safety in the Midst of Recent Protests

Protests over the death of George Floyd, a black man killed while in police custody in Minneapolis over Memorial Day weekend, have erupted in cities across the country. In Portland, protesters have shut down traffic on local streets over multiple nights, restricting the movements of drivers in the area. Some of the participants have taken to actual rioting, resulting in looting of local stores and extensive property damages. All of this creates dangers for drivers in the area and for those traveling through, heading to other destinations.

As protesters continue to call attention to police misconduct and racism in the country, motorists in affected areas need to be prepared. Ways you can protect yourself and prevent car accident injuries during this time include:

  • Check news and traffic reports before you head out;
  • Look for alternate routes to avoid protesters and potential road closures;
  • Give yourself extra time to reach your destination;
  • Be alert for aggressive drivers and those who may be distracted by what is going on;
  • Pay close attention to police attempting to control the crowds and follow their instructions regarding detours and road closures.

Portland Man Gets Payout From Portland Police After Car Accident

Incidents involving police brutality and other bad behavior on the part of law enforcement officials have occurred throughout the country. Unfortunately, Portland is no stranger to these types of allegations. A local man recently received a large payout from the local police department as a result of injuries he sustained after innocently being caught up in a police chase. According to a May 2020 Oregon Live news report, the man was a cab driver back in 2018 when he was struck by a police cruiser chasing a suspect the wrong way down Interstate 84. After two years of legal battles, the man finally received a settlement of $125,000 to cover the medical expenses and lost wages he incurred as a result of his injuries.

In terms of overly aggressive actions on the part of police officers, these types of crashes are one of the most commonly reported incidents. According to BMJ researchers, hundreds of innocent people are injured in police pursuit related crashes each year. Considering the current situation surrounding the protests in Portland, it is important for drivers to be aware of these risks.
