On December 18 at 6:00 a.m., 80 passengers and five crew members embarked an Amtrack train on an inaugural trip on a new service from Seattle to Portland, Oregon when disaster struck at approximately 7:38 a.m. One of the two engines and 12 of the Amtrack train’s carriages derailed from a bridge onto I-5 near Mounts Road between Lakewood and Olympia while traveling at nearly THREE TIMES the speed limit. It is reported there have been 70 injuries and three fatalities.
The crash is under federal investigation. We will know more about why the train derailed as they put all the pieces together.
