Oregon Uses Inspections to Help Curb Truck Accidents and Injuries

Oregon residents rely on semi-trucks, tractor-trailers, and other big rigs to deliver products and materials throughout the state. As the number of trucks on state highways and local roads have increased over the years, so has the potential for crashes and collisions. Considering the massive size and weight of most commercial rigs, when truck accidents do occur other motorists on the road often suffer the most serious impacts. To protect residents, Oregon relies on vigilant inspectors to ensure truck drivers and the machines they operate are safe and adhering to regulations.

Overseeing the Truck Industry in Oregon

According to the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), an average of more than 3,000 truck accidents occur each year throughout the state, claiming the lives of more than 50 people and leaving as many as 1,500 others with serious injuries. In the majority of cases, the massive size of most trucks provides a level of protection for the driver a level of protection. It is other motorists impacted by these accidents who suffer the brunt of the harm.

While truck accidents represent only ten percent of crashes and collisions on Oregon roads, preventing them is an issue the state takes seriously. As part of the state Traffic Safety Action Plan adopted in 2016, increased numbers of truck compliance specialists have been trained and deployed to monitor activity in the truck industry at key ports of entry throughout the state.

Truck drivers can expect to find inspectors at Woodburn, Klamath Falls, Huntington, Ashland, and Cascade Locks stations. They review the truck drivers’ credentials, the condition of the truck they are operating, and the amount and type of cargo they carry to ensure it passes state safety regulations.

Reducing the Risks for Truck Accidents In Oregon

According to a late December 2019 news report by the Mail Tribune, the state views truck inspections as one of the primary tools in preventing truck accidents in Oregon. Compliance specialists complete close to 20,000 of these inspections each year and end up issuing more than 3,000 citations. Among the most frequently cited problems include:

  • Lack of the required licensing and registration for driving a truck in Oregon;
  • Lack of proper permits for the types and sizes of loads they are carrying;
  • Weight limits that exceed the maximum limit on each truck axle;
  • Improperly loaded or secured cargo.

By interacting with truck drivers, inspectors can also help to head off truck accidents caused by reckless driving behaviors, such as being overly tired or under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or prescription medications. In the future, Oregon plans on using technological developments to detect mechanical issues, such as problems with tires, axles, or brakes.
