Older adults, specifically those over the age of 65, are an at risk population. Even under ideal circumstances, they are more likely to be involved in different types of accidents. The current coronavirus pandemic only makes matters worse. It jeopardizes their health, creates additional difficulties in attending to day-to-day tasks, and increases the risk of personal injuries. The following highlights ways to protect yourself or the older adult loved ones in your life.
Personal Injury Risks Among Older Adults
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that for people over 65, even a seemingly minor accident can end up causing them major harm. Unfortunately, older adults are less likely to bounce back than their younger counterparts. Injuries they sustain can lead to permanent disabilities and even hasten an untimely death. Among the leading causes of personal injuries among older adults include:
- Slips and falls: The CDC warns that these are the number one cause of disability and death for those over 65. They can occur in the home, in medical settings, at grocery stores and retail establishments, or in any public place.
- Car accidents: Vision impairments, slower reflexes, and a general decrease in coordination are all common impacts that occur due to aging. These can combine to make car accidents more likely to happen.
- Pedestrian accidents: Walking is an excellent form of physical fitness for older adults. Unfortunately, pedestrian accidents that occur side streets, crosswalks, intersections, and parking lots are a leading cause of potentially life threatening personal injuries.
Ways Older Adults Can Protect Themselves
In addition to the day-to-day risks older adults typically face, there is increased concern over their health due to the coronavirus epidemic. While contracting COVID-19 is potentially dangerous at any age, older adults are particularly vulnerable to life threatening complications. As a result, it is important for them to practice social distancing, remaining in their homes and emerging only to get groceries or perform other important tasks.
To protect them and to ensure they have easier access to the items they need, FOX 12 Oregon reported on March 18, 2020 that local grocery stores throughout Vancouver were now setting aside special hours for shopping each morning specifically for older adults. The following tips can help to protect them when venturing out:
- If driving to the store, go slowly, pay close attention to the road in front of you, and avoid any types of distractions, such as cell phones.
- If walking, use only designated crosswalks, wear bright colors to increase visibility, and be alert to drivers on the road.
- Wear shoes with non-slip soles, which can help you avoid slips and falls.
- At stores, avoid cluttered, crowded aisles and ask for help in reaching items stacked high on shelves.
