Truck accidents in Portland can happen for a variety of reasons. In many cases, reckless driving behaviors on the part of truckers are often to blame. However, considering the large size and bulk of most big rigs, situations that are sometimes beyond their control can also create risks. When mechanical failures or other issues cause truckers to pull over on the side of the road, it puts other motorists passing by in jeopardy.
Truck Accident Proves Fatal For One Driver, Leaves Others With Serious Injuries
A recent truck accident near Portland claimed the life of one of the drivers involved. According to a February 10, 2021 report by KOIN News, it happened the previous Tuesday evening on Highway 219, near milepost 22.
The Oregon State Police report that a tow truck driver was hooking up a trailer on the shoulder of the southbound lane at approximately 6:15 P.M. A 20-year-old man driving a Nissan Frontier came up from behind the truck and attempted to pass by crossing into the northbound lane. Unfortunately, he collided head on with a 22-year-old woman driving a Kia. Due to the severity of her injuries, she died at the scene. The Nissan driver and a passenger in the Kia were taken to local hospitals and are listed in critical condition.
Roadside Stops a Common Factor in Truck Accidents
The above scenario is not uncommon. In fact, roadside stops are a frequent factor in truck accidents, as well as other types of motor vehicle collisions.
Truck drivers often need to use the shoulder as part of their jobs, such as with tow truck drivers and truckers on road construction crews. Even if their job does not require it, truckers spend long hours on the road and may end up having to pull over for a variety of reasons, such as:
- Mechanical problems, such as missing or blown tires or engine issues;
- To rearrange loads, fix trailer hitches, or perform general safety checks;
- To assist other truckers or motorists;
- To reassess directions and instructions for drop-off and pick-up points;
- To take breaks or catch up on badly needed rest.
Many highways and interstates lack the space needed for truckers to pull over. Even when a side shoulder is available, the large size and bulk of most trucks create traffic risks. Motorists may not be able to see hazards past the truck or, as in the above case, have to go into opposing lanes to pass. Truck accident risks also increase when truckers pull out from these spots, due to slow acceleration that makes it hard to keep up with other vehicles.
